Leitchfield man charged after police say dog dragged behind vehicle by chain

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One man has been criminally charged after police say a dog was seen being dragged behind a vehicle by a chain.

According to a news release by the Leitchfield Police Department, it happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday. Police were called to a home on West White Oak Street in Leitchfield, Kentucky, after someone reported seeing the dog being dragged by the vehicle.

Police say they found the vehicle, as well as the dog, a Bully Breed dog. The dog had sustained injuries to all four of its paws as well as its belly.

Charles J. Weedman, 50, was charged with second-degree cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to appear in Grayson County District Court to answer for that charge later this month.

The dog, which has since been named "Khaleesi," was seized by Leitchfield Animal Control officers and taken to an emergency veterinarian who treated it. The dog has since been taken to a foster care facility.

"Khaleesi is currently recovering with round-the-clock care by a team of individuals who are making sure she is as comfortable and pain-free as possible," said Leitchfield Animal Shelter Director Jessica Pharis Williams, in a statement. "She's had a really good day today and seems to be making great progress, but still has a long way to go. We appreciate all of the interest that she's receiving from the public, however, she is not available for adoption.
