LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are investigating after a man fired at SWAT members during a standoff Thursday in Shively.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Woodmere Avenue, off Dixie Highway and Nelson Avenue, LMPD spokesman John Bradley said during a press briefing near the scene. That's where deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office were serving an arrest warrant on William Fry, 48, who was indicted on three wanton endangerment charges.

According to an arrest citation, a woman answered the door as deputies were trying to make contact and told deputies that Fry wasn't there.

But deputies at another location of the house could see inside, and saw Fry armed with a long rifle. Fry pointed the rifle at one of the LMPD officers on scene, and out of an abundance of caution, Bradley said deputies pulled back, set up a perimeter around the house and called LMPD's SWAT team.

SWAT arrived and secured the perimeter before attempting to coax Fry out of the house. Bradley said multiple attempts were made to get Fry to surrender.

According to the citation, Fry then barricaded himself in the basement along with the woman. That's when he put on body armor, grabbed more handguns and long rifles, and threatened the woman several times, telling her "it was a good day to die," according to the citation.

After a four-hour standoff, SWAT eventually entered the home. While making a sweep of the house, Bradley said Fry fired several rounds at officers with the rifle.

No one was injured.

At that point, Bradley said SWAT officers "introduced some irritants," like teargas, and some concussion devices," such as flashbangs.

Fry eventually came out of the home, still armed with multiple handguns and body armor. He surrendered, and was taken into custody.

LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is taking over the case and will handle the investigation. Bradley said there is no active threat to the community.

Fry is charged with wanton endangerment of a police officer, attempted murder of a first responder, unlawful imprisonment, and terroristic threatening.
