LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department released the names of the four officers involved in the fatal shooting Jan. 4 of a man wanted for shooting an southern Indiana sheriff's deputy.

Benjamin Derby, Jan Dykes, Robert Ross and Joshua Trumbo, all detectives in LMPD's Criminal Interdiction Division, fired their weapons before 33-year-old Austin Schepers was killed in Louisville. It's unclear who fired the fatal shot.

Indiana State Police said Schepers shot Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Zac Andry four times during a traffic stop on Highway 150 near West Baden at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3. Police were searching for Schepers ever since the shooting happened. He was believed to be in New Albany or the greater Louisville area.

On Saturday, ISP said police located Schepers in the 3700 block of Wheeler Avenue, off Taylor Blvd. in Louisville, in the backyard of a home. LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said Schepers shot at officers. Multiple LMPD officers and U.S. Marshals deputies returned fire.

Schepers died at the scene. There was a heavy police presence in the area, but no police officers or people in the area were injured in the shooting, LMPD said.

Humphrey said there is body-worn camera footage from the shooting. LMPD plans to release the footage within 10 business days.

According to ISP Master Trooper Philip Hensley, Andry underwent surgery Friday morning and the surgeon was "very pleased with the outcome." He was last reported in critical but stable condition.

Derby shot a 17-year-old homicide suspect in May 2024 after police said he fired at a police K-9 while being pinned to the ground by several officers. Body camera video showed the encounter. The suspect died eight days later at the hospital.

Trumbo and Ross have been suspended for previous conduct, according to their LMPD personnel files. All four officers have received several letters of commendation.
