LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Two teenagers were arrested after shots were fired in a crowded Louisville park last week, according to Louisville Metro Police.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the Orange parking lot at Waterfront Park when two groups of teenagers got into an altercation and began firing guns, according to police. Surveillance video released by authorities shows people walking through the park before suddenly running as shots rang out, with parents grabbing their children to flee.
Police officers were already present at the park as part of an increased visibility effort, LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said. The officers, assigned from various parts of the city on overtime detail, were just feet away when the shooting occurred.
“We understand that where people gather, we need to have police officers so that we can not only respond but also deter crime,” Humphrey said. “We want people to see police officers and feel safe, and we want those considering criminal activity to know it’s not a place to commit crime.”
Authorities recovered a Draco pistol, a compact firearm similar to an AK-47, from a 17-year-old suspect at the scene. The weapon fires rifle ammunition with three-inch bullets.
The investigation is ongoing.
