LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police have made an arrest in the murder of a 25-year-old man in the city's Buechel neighborhood in January.

Eric Slayton, 31, was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in the shooting death of Taylor Mudd, LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said in a statement.

Mudd was found shot inside a vehicle at the intersection of Bardstown Road and Fegenbush Lane around 5:30 p.m. Jan. 24, police said at the time. He was found not far from Breckenridge Lane and Buechel Bypass.

Mudd was taken to University of Louisville Hospital where he later died.

According to an arrest warrant, Mudd was the passenger in a vehicle at the time of the shooting. The driver told police they were at an intersection when Slayton ran a stop sign, forcing her to swerve around his vehicle to avoid hitting it.

She said that's when Slayton began tailgating the vehicle on Buechel Terrace, pulled up next to them at a red light, pointed a handgun at them and fired multiple rounds, according to the warrant.

Mudd was hit "multiple times," while the driver was hit by one of the projectiles in the side. Slayton took off after the shooting in a white Jeep Cherokee as a witness called 911.

Police were able to identify Slayton as a possible suspect, with cellphone data putting him at the scene of the shooting when it happened. Police also learned that the Jeep Slayton was driving had been reported stolen Jan. 13 from Neil Huffman in Jefferson County. It was later found abandoned, with a temporary registration tag that was reported stolen, and recovered by LMPD.

Witnesses told police Slayton had been driving the Jeep until after the shooting. That's when he began driving a truck registered to his girlfriend.

In addition to the murder charge, Humphrey said Slayton was also charged with assault, receiving stolen property (firearm) and theft of motor vehicle registration.

An arrest citation for Slayton said he had a stolen handgun on him at the time of his arrest, which was reported stolen out of Madison County, Indiana.
