LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A teenage girl was killed early Tuesday morning after being hit by multiple vehicles while attempting to cross a Louisville road.

Louisville Metro Police officers responded around 6:50 a.m. to the area of Cane Run Road and Teakwood Circle on a report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

A spokesperson said preliminary investigation indicates a 16-year-old girl was attempting to cross Cane Run Road — from west to east, near Teakwood Circle — when she was hit by two southbound vehicles.

Police said the teen wasn't in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash. Investigators said the vehicles involved included a passenger vehicle and an SUV.

The girl, identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Janiah Brown, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. The coroner's office said she died of blunt force injuries.

Police said all drivers involved remained at the scene.

At a JCPS meeting Tuesday night, board chair Corrie Shull said Brown was a junior at Central High School.

"This is a tragedy. Two parents lost their 16-year-old girl in a tragic way," said Ellasha Ferriell, who lives near the scene and said more lighting is needed in the area. "When I come out for work sometimes or when I leave the house and it's still dark in the morning, it's really dark here. There are no lights."

District 1 Metro Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins said she plans on talking with the state about more lighting, crosswalks and the speeding that happens in the area.

"This has been an issue for this area for quite some while," Hawkins said. "This road is a state road."

The LMPD Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
