SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --Â The arrest and eviction of a man in Shepherdsville left more than 100 animals and a mess behind.
With the animals left to fend for themselves, neighbors now say they're relieved to see them, and the tenant, are gone.
The man who was renting the home had "No Trespassing" signs posted all over the place to keep people off the property. Until earlier this week, he lived at the home with dozens of cats, dogs, pigeons, chickens, goats and small pigs. Now, all or most of the animals — and the man who lived there — are in the care of the county.
The mess of old animal crates, trash, old clothes, and miscellaneous garbage spreads from one end of the property to the next. The tenant of the home is now in the Bullitt County Detention Center. But the landlord doesn't want to talk about the mess left behind or to WDRB — who went to the home on Wednesday to ask questions.
"I will get that camera and tear it all to pieces if you don't get the hell out of here," the man said as he charged toward a WDRB News crew. "Get out of here!"
The tenant was arrested on July 17 for drug possession and firearms charges. Most neighbors declined to talk on-camera out of fear, except for one neighbor who asked to be called Allen.
"Just cause I'm still in the neighborhood, where there are still friends and everything," he said.
For the past couple of years, Allen said the animal collection across the street from him grew slowly.
"Well, the obvious is it is a sight sore," he said. "Especially, I think he had 12 to 13 roosters out front. The little farm, the little zoo he had in the backyard."
Eventually, the animals dominated the property. By one count -- from a neighbor that has helped care for the animals -- there were 20-30 dogs and cats, 60 chickens, 50 or so pigeons, 50 rabbits, a dozen goats, a few horses, and a lot of small pigs. The domestic animals are now in a shelter, while many of the rabbits, chickens and pigeons now living a new life in the wild. But at least one pig is still roaming the neighborhood.
"He came in the yard, my dog barked at him through the front door and chased him off," Allen told WDRB. "He was over there for a while, I seen him walk down the road."
The Bullitt County Animal Control Office told WDRB it plans to file charges against the former tenant, as the property owner is left with a big mess to clean up -- something neighbors say is long overdue.
