LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky woman who police say caused a deadly crash in Bullitt County over the summer had just taken drugs and was on the phone with her husband in jail when it happened.

Dawn Middleton, 31, of Taylorsville, is being held on a $1 million cash bond. According to court documents, she was arrested on a warrant on Oct. 25 after being indicted on two murder charges, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of controlled substances and disregarding a traffic light.

Two people were killed in the crash around 3:30 p.m. on June 5 on Preston Highway at Old Preston Highway near Marketplace Drive in Hillview. At the time, Hillview police reported that the crash was between a pickup truck and an SUV. The two people in the pickup truck died at the scene.

Middleton was under the influence of amphetamines, benzodiazepine, methadone and cannabinoids at the time of the crash, according to court documents.

Police said Middleton was driving her father's Ford Escape on Preston Highway when she disregarded a red light at the intersection of Preston Highway North at Marketplace Drive and Old Preston Highway when she hit the passenger side door of a pickup truck.

The impact of the crash caused the pickup to roll over, causing "extreme blunt force trauma" that led to the deaths of the truck's two occupants.

Police said security camera video was obtained from a nearby business that caught the crash. They also preserved medical and KSP lab blood test results, as well as a jail phone call between Middleton and her husband where she admitted to "abusing controlled substances just before the collision." The crash was also recorded during that phone call.

Middleton was arraigned in Bullitt District Court Monday morning, where a judge entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. She was appointed a public defender and her bond was set at $1 million cash. Middleton is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in court on Nov. 7.
