I-71 DRONE

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Daytime lane closures are scheduled through Wednesday in both directions on Interstate 71 this week.

Closures will happen between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Overnight lane closures are also possible from 7 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Crews will be working to install barrier walls, fill potholes and complete corrective striping work from the Interstate 65/I-71 interchange near Frankfort Avenue to the I-71/Zorn Avenue interchange. The work will prepare the interstate for construction in the median.

After temporary daytime closures on the interstate last week, traffic is now shifted to the outside shoulders in order for there to be two travel lanes throughout the construction project.

The work is part of the $50 million I-71 widening and improvement project by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The two-year project started Nov. 17. It will add two lanes — one in each direction — along a 2-mile stretch of the interstate between the I-65/I-71 interchange near Frankfort Avenue, to the I-71/Zorn Avenue interchange. That will bring the interstate up to a total of six lanes from four.

KYTC said the additional lanes will ease traffic congestion, increase safety and improve efficiency.

The agency expects the project to be finished by fall 2027. To sign up to receive alerts about traffic impacts during this and other projects, click here.
