LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Breaking up concrete and adding trees in an effort to keep Louisville a little cooler.
Saturday morning, volunteers came with pick axes in hand to remove squares of asphalt and concrete from the parking lot used for the Phoenix Hill Farmer's Market and the Flea Off Market in downtown Louisville.
The DePave Project will add eight trees in the concrete's place. Organizers say this will help to reduce Louisville's Urban Heat Island Effect.
"It feels amazing to actually remove the big blocks of asphalt and concrete, get them in the dumpster for recycling and know that soon this is going to be a beautiful canopy of trees," Valerie Magnuson, DePave Project coordinator, said.
The event was held by Louisville based non-profit Earth Church. The organization hopes to partner with other area property owners for more DePave projects next year.
