LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As crowds head outdoors for Memorial Day weekend, doctors are warning people not to overlook the dangers of sun exposure.

The American Cancer Society estimated more than 100,000 new cases of invasive melanoma are diagnosed in the United States each year. The disease is one of the most common cancers among young adults and can quickly spread if left untreated.

Health experts with UofL Health said people should watch for unusual spots or moles, especially ones with uneven colors, irregular borders or changes in appearance.

Smita Ranjan, an advanced practice registered nurse with the Brown Cancer Center, said melanoma is strongly linked to ultraviolet ray exposure.

Doctors recommend limiting time in direct sunlight, wearing protective clothing and applying sunscreen with a high SPF before heading outside.

Experts also said sunscreen should be reapplied often while swimming because water and sunlight reflection can increase ultraviolet exposure.

Providers said early detection remains one of the best defenses against melanoma and encourage people to routinely check their skin for changes.
