LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens of people are getting a shot at a second chance thanks to Goodwill.

The organization hosted an expungement clinic at the Portland Community Center on Thursday.

Fifty people in attendance got free legal advice, and, if they were eligible, Goodwill started the expungement process.

The expungement process essentially erases or seals a conviction, removing it from a person's criminal record. A criminal conviction often makes it difficult to get a job or get approved for other necessities.

"The importance is removing the barriers to housing, employment, and education, when it comes to records or backgrounds," said Miranda Montgomery, supervisor of the Goodwill Expungement Team.

Last year, Goodwill expunged more than 2,500 criminal records across Kentucky.

The next expungement clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Versailles Baptist Church in Versailles, Kentucky. Registration is required to attend. For more information about future expungement clinics, Goodwill's expungement services, or to register for the Oct. 17 clinic, click here.
