LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Whether you're a classic drummer like Ringo Starr, a hard rocker like Tommy Lee, or more of a dashboard drummer the likes of Animal from the Muppets, any level of musical background is welcome at the Northeast YMCA's "Pound" class.
Laura Bycroft teaches the drum based workout that combines cardio and strength training with constant movement.
"It's almost like you're having a party and you're working out at the same time," said Bycroft.
Trading in dumbbells for drumsticks, the floor becomes the instrument of choice.
"I mean these drumsticks are weighted. They're a quarter-of- a-pound each. You're drumming the whole time and your heart rate is up. It's awesome," said Bycroft.
The class has only been available since October, but Y-memebers seem to like working out to the beat of their own drum.
"The classes are full. People love it, and even if you don't have that rhythm it's still so much fun because you can still get that workout in," said Bycroft.
Whether you're a musical novice or a fitness first-timer, Bycroft says "Pound" is for anyone.
"Most of them are scared. How do I do these? And as soon as we turn on the music and you start off nice and slow and do the warmup they're already in to it," said Bycroft.
Carmen Seitz rocked out during her first "Pound" class.
"I loved it! I had a great workout and it was very exciting," said Seitz, who says she'll be back for another class.
"Everybody can do it. They can go their own pace. It's your workout," she said.
The workout claims classroom drummers can burn up to 900 calories during the hour long class that has you tapping in to your inner rockstar to get rock hard abs.
"Even if you can't get the sticks going, the music and the different ways you're moving your body it's just a great workout," said Bycroft.
In addition to classes at the Northeast YMCA, "Pound" is also available at the Southeast and Norton Commons YMCA.
