BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) — No weapons have been found in Bullitt County Public Schools buildings and administrators are trying to keep it that way with a new safety measure.
Last year, the district got the funds to add weapon detection systems in all high schools. They're finally being implemented for the 2026-27 school year starting the first day on Aug. 12.
"We just want to make sure we're doing everything that we can to prevent something catastrophic from happening in one of our buildings," BCPS Superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon said.
Students at Bullitt East, Bullitt Central, North Bullitt and the Area Technology Center will put their bag on a conveyor belt and walk through metal detectors. Administrators will be looking for guns or pocketknives on students.
Students will be able to enter through one of two entrances at each school. There will be a conveyor belt and two metal detectors at each entrance.
BCPS is not the only district taking these safety measures. Shelby County Public Schools implemented weapon detection systems in April.
"They don't want to feel like they're being institutionalized and so we want to make sure that the process is not that way either,"Â Bacon said.
That's one of the reasons the district chose the company Xonar. Another reason, it has a feature that can detect vapes, which the district is hoping will be implemented by 2027.
"That's the number one issue that we deal with from a disciplinary standpoint right now," Bacon said. "If we can take that out of our students' hands making them healthier and safer than we certainly want to do that as well."
For now, it's to add that extra layer of safety.
"It's a step we wanted to take to provide an additional peace of mind for our students, for our staff and to our families," said Bacon.
BCPS is also creating its own police department for safety.
