LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Humana wants to help address a shortage of nurses in the Louisville area.
The company, in partnership with Kentucky Community & Technical College System, announced the Humana Scholars program Thursday.Ā
Humana will invest $125,000 toward the scholarship and support funding program for nursing students in Jefferson County. The program offers both scholarship money toward tuition and helps to reduce barriers like food insecurity or lack of transportation for first-year nursing students.Ā
The money is already helping students pay for their education.
"It's made all the difference," said Michael Eubanks, a nursing student. "I haven't had to work as much, and my grades are improving, and it's definitely set me up for success to pass and graduate in May."
Nearly 75% of students graduate from the KCTCS nursing program with no student debt. School leaders said donations like Humana's are the reason that's possible.
Although the Humana Scholars program is currently for Jefferson County nursing students, other colleges in the KCTCS system may be added at a later date.
