LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools reminded families Friday that the district will continue to serve free meals for students in November despite the continuing government shutdown.

All JCPS students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch through the Community Eligibility program. It feeds about 50,000 students at breakfast each day and 80,000 students at lunch.

Those numbers are expected to rise, though, as SNAP benefits are set to be cut off Saturday as the government shutdown stretches into a second month in Washington. The program is federally funded, but the district said it has enough money to get through November.

"We just want to reassure parents that, currently, we have federal funding through the end of November," said Terina Eddington with JCPS Nutritional Services. "So we will continue to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to students at least through the month of November."

Seventy-five schools also serve dinner to students who attend after-school tutoring and enrichment programs.
