LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some Jefferson County Public Schools students got some blessings right before Thanksgiving.
Students at Zachary Taylor Elementary School received bags and food boxes Tuesday morning from Blessings in a Backpack. Many of the 55 JCPS schools served by the program gave out two weekends worth of food last Friday.
Program leaders said one in eight American children may be struggling with access to food. So Blessings in a Backpack makes sure the kids have something to eat when they're not in school.
"A lot of our kids, some of them don't have food at home and they rely on these snacks to get them through the weekend," said Grace Ortega, family resource coordinator at Blessings in a Backpack. "So they rely on these snacks Wednesday through Friday and then until Monday. We give them double the amount to get by if they need some."
Students at Lincoln Elementary School also received food bags Tuesday.
