LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools' Summer Success League is happening this week.
The free program, formerly known as the Backpack League, gives kids the opportunity to continue to learn while having fun at the same time.
It focuses on hands-on literacy and math activities to keep young brains active during the summer.Â
Teachers said the program will help students excel when they return in the fall for the 2025-26 school year.
"Our goal is to have the academic rigour, but with the engagement activities," Sara Nethery, principal of Bates Elementary School, said. "So you're going to see in classrooms, they're not going to just be sitting in classrooms, writing in workbooks and quiet. They're active and learning and hands-on, in action."
More than 7,000 students from K-12 are enrolled in the program, which also provides transportation and meals.
