LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The newest member of the Jefferson County Public School Board of Education wants to hit the ground running.
Although she has spent the last 40 years in corporate communications, Gail Strange is returning to her roots. That's because she's a certified public school teacher.

Earlier this month, the board of education voted unanimously to appoint Strange to represent District 1.
"It was a little surreal because it just happened so quickly," she said.
Strange was appointed to finish the term of longtime board member and lifelong educator Diane Porter.
"And Diane Porter has been very supportive, and just very encouraging," Strange said.
After more than 50 years in education, Porter resigned in October for health reasons.
"She's been one of my biggest cheerleaders," Strange said.
But she's still passionate about educating children and has given Strange her blessings.
"And she has said, 'If I can help you in any way, give me a call,'" Strange said.
In 2005, Strange ran for the seat but lost to the incumbent.
"Diane Porter ran after that term ended," Strange said. "And I was cool with that because Diane was an educator, she was passionate about the children. So I knew the kids were in good hands."
In November, Strange retired from corporate America and a radio show she co-hosted for more than 20 years and explains why her next stop is not at home on the sofa.
"My passion is making sure children are exposed and are educated because if they never have the opportunity to get exposed to things they will never know," Strange said.
From ongoing transportation issues to school choice, Strange knows it won't be easy but believes change is coming.
"This thing will turn around and the schools, the busing and times and all that will get better," Strange said.
The seat will be up for reelection November 2024 and Strange said she intends to run then.
