LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 100 people grabbed their paddles to head out for an urban adventure on the water over the weekend.

Jefferson Memorial Forest staff took individuals and families out for an Urban Canoe Adventure in Shawnee Park Saturday morning.

During the annual event staff guides canoers along the way and trains them to be on their own in the future.

David Grissom, a manager for Louisville Parks and Recreations, said all the canoe equipment was provided. The canoes were for eight people ages five and up - including two guides.

"We think it is important that people stay connected to their natural environment to the Ohio River. We are a river city. There are some trees that give us some great, beautiful environments, but we want people to be connected to the river," Grissom said.

The event continues Sunday at Riverview Park on Greenwood Road from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The last boat leaves at 2 p.m.

No registration is needed, but please wear comfortable outdoor clothing and no flip flops. All canoe equipment will be provided, sunscreen and a water bottle are recommended. Participants under 18 must have a wavier signed by a parent/legal guardian.
