LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Soldiers from Fort Knox paid tribute to a former U.S. president at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville on Wednesday.
After being born in Virginia in 1784, Zachary Taylor moved to Kentucky as an infant with his family. The general was elected as the 12th U.S. President and served from March 1849 until his death in July 1850.
He was buried at family burial grounds in Louisville on Brownsboro Road near I-264.Â
According to a news release, each year a U.S. military general or flag officers lay a wreath provided by the White House at the graveside of each deceased former U.S. president on the anniversary of their births. Taylor was born on Nov. 24, 1784.Â
Brig. Gen. Roger Deon, Jr., the commanding general of Army Reserve Aviation Command, hosted the ceremony on Wednesday. An honor cordon from the 84th Training Command assisted him with the wreath laying.
A granite shaft surmounted by a life-size figure of Taylor was erected by the state of Kentucky in 1883. The U.S. then erected a new limestone neoclassical-style building with a marble interior in 1923.Â
