LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Kentucky State Fair is known for the food, rides and animals, but it's also offering services focused on health.
While the fair only takes place for a short time, these services are meant for year-round prevention. A few minutes away from the fun can make all the difference in the long run while also saving time and money.
Monday afternoon, Mary Morris made her annual stop at the state fair. While Morris enjoys all it has to offer, she also attended in honor of her family.
"There is breast cancer on both my father and my mother's side," she said. "My grandmother had breast cancer."
Between all the food and vendors, Morris took the time to stop for a mammogram.
"It is simple," she said. "I was probably in and out in less than 30 minutes."
Dozens of healthcare providers, hospitals and organizations are offering a variety of services to fairgoers. From cancer screenings to blood donations, most services are free or cost nothing out of pocket.
"If individuals don't have insurance, we have resources for women, for breast and cervical cancer screening, for colon cancer screening and lung cancer screening," said Pam Temple, with the Kentucky Cancer Program.
Results from those screenings can be sent to a person's primary care provider.Â
Services aren't just there for senior fair attendees. Jack Ingram is 24 years old, and has always had concerns about his hearing.
"I had a lot of ear exams done as a kid," Ingram said. "Ear tube replacement to ear surgeries, and it was just something I have always been told to pay attention to."
For many attending the fair, there's a focus on health and not just on the fun.
"That is the goal, to be proactive and to not have to decide later how you're going to react," said Morris.
Tuesday is Senior Day at the fair. Anyone age 55 and older can get into the fair for free.
Health services and screenings will be available through Sunday, Aug. 30.Â
