LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bernheim Forest is aglow with mushrooms.
The glowing mushrooms, called Russula ssp, glow because of natural phenomena called bioluminescence or bio-fluorescence.
Bernheim Volunteer Photographer Eric Nally and Volunteer Naturalist Bill Napper went deep into the forest at night to capture photos using a special UV torch.
Forest leaders said the Russula ssp are just one part of 50 documented species of mushrooms found within the forest.
Bernheim is an arboretum and research forest, which means mushroom collecting is not permitted as it is protected land.
