LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A gun was stopped from entering a Louisville high school Thursday after the school’s weapons detection system flagged it in a student’s backpack.

In an email sent to Waggener High School parents Thursday afternoon, Principal Dr. Sarah Hitchings told families the school's weapons detection system found a gun in a student's backpack.

Hitchings said the student was late, and the detectors caught the weapon around 9:15 a.m. in the student's backpack.

JCPS Police immediately secured the gun, and it was never used in a threatening manner at the school, Hutchings said.

The student is being disciplined and will face criminal charges.
