LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- On the first day of fall, hundreds of people were outside in nature in Louisville and learning about it.
The Louisville Nature Center hosted its first annual Pawpaw Festival on Saturday. The festival included workshops, guided hikes, crafts and live music.
The nature center calls the pawpaw — a fruit native to Kentucky — the 2023 tree of the year. Small saplings and seedlings were given away Saturday, and other plants were available for purchase.
But how does a Pawpaw taste?
"They kind of taste like a cross between a banana and a mango with this very custardy texture," said Rebecca Minnick, one of the organizer's of Saturday's festival. "It is a little of a strange flavor and texture, but they are pretty great, and we have made a lot of products with them."
Some of those products people could try included pawpaw beer and ice cream.
