LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Residents around Kentuckiana got a special treat Thursday night as the Aurora Borealis lit up the night sky.

Viewers sent in some stunning photos, and WDRB's own Marc Weinberg was on assignment, taking his own photos of the lights.

The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, are the result of electrons colliding with the upper reaches of Earth’s atmosphere. The best way to see the Northern Lights is with a long-exposure camera, but a view with the naked eye is certainly possible!

For more about the Aurora Borealis, read WDRB's Rick DeLuca's weather blog here.
