LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An investigation is underway in Indiana to determine the cause of an increase in utility bills.
The Indiana Utility Regulator Commission is calling on the top five utility companies, including Duke Energy and CenterPoint Energy, to explain what's driving up costs.
Chairman Andy Zay said the investigation will also look into what can be done right now to increase bill transparency and lower utility bills, according to FOX59 News.
"I believe this inquiry will allow us to create a foundation of knowledge, a foundation of information gathering that will allow us to do next steps," Zay said.
The inquiry will consist of a daylong series of public, one-on-one meetings with individual utilities in March.
"It's about time we took a deep dive, take a look into how did we get here? How do we get out of here? And is there any kind of relief showing up," Rep. Jim Pressel, R-Rolling Prairie, said.Â
The state's Deneral Assembly passed House Bill 1002, which Pressel co-authored, that creates accountability metrics utilities have top hit.
Lawmakers say they hope the results of the inquiry will help them build off of House Bill 1002 next year.
"It helps the legislators then to have the answers," Rep. Randy Novak, D-Michigan City, said. "If something needs to be fixed, then we have the tools to fix it."
