IU didn't alert students to naked gunman

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana University spokesman says the school didn't issue an alert about a naked man firing a gun near the Bloomington campus because police caught him so quickly.

IU spokesman Mark Land says by the time campus police arrived at the scene a few blocks southwest of Memorial Stadium about 7 a.m. Friday, city police officers had already captured the gunman.

Police Chief Mike Diekhoff tells The Herald-Times officers shot the man, who was shooting and waving a gun around when they arrived. The man was taken to a hospital, but police didn't immediately say how badly he was wounded.

Land says IU's text and email alert system is designed to warn students of imminent or ongoing threats, and the situation was off campus and ended quickly.
