LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A group of Jefferson County Public Schools students sharpened their music skills on Friday with the help of a local Grammy-nominated musician.
Fifteen students from Olmsted Academy South worked with Jim James, of My Morning Jacket and a Louisville native, and other local musicians to write their very own songs.
During the 6-week program, students came up with lyrics while the musicians worked on musical arrangements to go with the words.
James and the other musicians collaborating with the students performed the new songs during a concert at the school on Friday.
"Music is so universal, and all the students come in loving the music that they all love already in their lives," James said. "So it's cool to kind of watch them take their feelings and their emotions and kind of shape it into the music that they like."
The program was made possible through the Young Authors Greenhouse, a local nonprofit that inspires students through writing.
