LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky lawmakers want to place cannabis-infused beverages under the same rules as alcohol.

A Senate committee advanced Senate Bill 223, sponsored by Sen. Stephen Meredith, R-Leitchfield, which would regulate THC-infused drinks and limit where they can be sold.

If approved, the beverages could only be sold in licensed establishments and would be restricted to adults. Bars, restaurants, entertainment venues, fairs and festivals could serve the drinks if they obtain the proper license.

The legislation also would ban open THC beverage containers in moving vehicles, similar to Kentucky’s open container law for alcohol.

Supporters said the bill would create clearer rules for a rapidly growing market while adding safeguards for consumers.

"Senate Bill 223 simply regulates THC beverages like alcohol — keeping them in licensed establishments, restricting them to adults and putting ABC clearly in charge," Meredith said.

The measure now heads to the full Senate for further consideration.
