LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 700 people in Kentucky received organ transplants last year.
Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates reported 299 organ donors allowed for 729 transplants, the most in the KODA history. Also thousands of people were helped through tissue donations.
Organ donation has increased by 25% compared to last year.
"Every day, our goal is to save lives, and we are consistently amazed by the selfless choices people make when they choose donation," Julie Bergin, president and CEO of KODA, said in a news release. "Giving the gift of life is the most generous act a person can make, and without our donors and donor families, we would have lost nearly 700 of our community members last year."
Last year, KODA received the highest number of donations and transplants for hearts, kidneys, livers and lungs. Heart donation transplants increased by more than 10%.
According to Donate Life, more than 105,000 Americans, including 1,000 Kentuckians are awaiting life-saving organs. For information about becoming an organ donor in Kentucky, visit Donate Life Ky.
