LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kumar Rashad, a Breckinridge Metropolitan High School math teacher who just last month was named the 2024 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, was reassigned to "non-instructional duties," a district spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Jefferson County Public Schools confirmed Tuesday that Rashad was reassigned but didn't provide any reasons for the move.

Rashad also serves as a Louisville Metro Council member, representing District 3, an area surrounding Dixie Highway from Algonquin Parkway to Rockford Lane.

In its news release announcing Rashad as its 2024 winner, the Kentucky Department of Education said he has spent nearly 22 years in education. He earned his Bachelor's degree in pure mathematics from Kentucky State University and a Master's degree from the University of Louisville.

In addition to his math class at Breckinridge Metro, KDE said Rashad also teaches a course called "Developing Black Historical Consciences." He told KDE the school is a common destination for students who've had trouble with the law.

"They normally send them here to Breckinridge for us to work with them to get them on the right path,” Rashad said.

Rashad also serves on the JCPS Advisory Council for Racial Equity, KDE said.

“I regret I am unable to publicly comment on the current situation with JCPS due to a pending investigation, but I am confident the outcome will clear my name," Rashad said in a statement Wednesday.

"No weapon formed against me will prosper. Accusation should never be substituted with condemnation," the statement said. "When this situation ends, and it should end soon, He will vindicate me. Faith over fear always, but until then no further comment. #RIPRichardRoundtree."
