LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Customers affected by a gas leak in downtown Louisville earlier this week might get service restored soon.
An LG&E spokesperson told WDRB crews have located the leak, but they also found a sinkhole near the leaking gas pipe on 5th Street, and that the hole may have been caused by recent rains and flooding.
Crews are still working to repair two halves of the affected pipe. The company hopes crews can complete work on one half of the pipe, restoring gas service to about half of the 21 affected customers.Â
The other half of pipe has to be modified to reroute the gas for the remaining customers. LG&E said they hope to have the rest of the customers' service restored by Saturday.
Due to the sinkhole, 5th Street between Jefferson and Liberty streets may be closed for some time.
Several buildings in downtown Louisville, including Metro Hall, were evacuated Tuesday morning after reports of a gas leak. Crews quickly arrived to test the area, and found high levels of gas inside and outside. Â
