LG&E gas leak repair demonstration 8-9-24

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Gas and Electric is reminding people to call before digging to make sure there isn't a utility line.

In recognition of National 811 Day this Sunday, crews demonstrated what they have to do to repair a gas leak on Friday.

LG&E said it's easy to prevent those leaks in the first place. Customers can call 811 to have underground utility lines marked before digging for any project.

Hitting one of those lines can lead to expensive damage repairs, disruptions to utility services and big fines.

"It is a risk to your safety, the safety of the individuals in the area, the safety to your family if you're a homeowner, and also to the general public. It's also a Kentucky law," LG&E Spokesperson Liz Pratt said.

It doesn't matter how small the project is, officials said you're required to have utility lines marked even if you're planting a bush or putting up a mailbox post.
