LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A block party was held in the Russell neighborhood ahead of the Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby Festival held a block party at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center Saturday. The free party has become an annual tradition that helps spotlight minority-owned businesses throughout the city's west end.
There were food trucks, live entertainment, a marketplace, more than 70 vendors and wellness resources.
"It's a great way to put money back into the community," said Dierdre Barnes, owner of Fly Girl Candies. "I can't remember how quick the dollar leaves the Black community but it is pretty quick so this is a good way to keep that in our community and circulate it a little bit longer than it has been."Â
The event included a pop-up pickleball courts. It is the fourth year that Kentucky Derby Festival has held the block party.
