LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With winter weather anticipated at the end of this week, water companies are reminding customers to take care of their pipes.
Indiana American Water shared some tips Wednesday to keep pipes from freezing.
First, they said to make sure your garage door and crawl space doors or vents are closed. Cabinet doors should remain open in bathrooms and kitchens so warm air can circulate through. They also say to consider leaving a faucet dripping with water to keep it moving through the pipes.
If you have uninsulated pipes, particularly in unheated areas, the water company said to consider wrapping them with foam insulation or electric heating tape, but to "follow manufacturer's instructions carefully to avoid a fire hazard."
Officials also suggest sealing any cracks or holes in outside walls and foundations with caulking and disconnecting hoses from spigots and shutting off the water that runs to it.
Making sure you know where your main water shut-off valve is located is also important, the company said, in case of an emergency.
