LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville-area firefighter drowned in a boating accident while in Tennessee Wednesday morning.

In a news release, Okolona Fire Protection District Chief Mark Little said Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) officers responded to Dale Hollow Lake at 12:50 a.m. CST on a man overboard.

Okolona Fire Capt. Chris Berry was on a camping and fishing trip with friends and took their bass boat out fishing during the night. Berry reportedly stumbled and fell into the water.

His body was recovered around 8:30 a.m. and was taken to the Nashville Medical Examiner's Office.

“We are crushed by this tragedy,” Little said. “To our cherished friends, family, and the Emergency Responders Committee, words cannot adequately express the depth of our gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and support you have shown to both the Berry and Okolona Fire families during this incredibly difficult time.”

Berry was 35 years old and had been with the department for nine years.

A brief procession will take place Friday around mid-to-late afternoon as the department will pass by Okolona Fire Station 2 at 10508 Preston Highway while bringing Berry back home from Nashville.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
