LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 10-year-old boy from Louisville is making history.

DuJuan Broadus Jr., who has struggled with hearing loss, becomes the first in the country to get a new kind of cochlear implant. He received the implant in December, according to a release from the university.

The fourth grader was referred to UK HealthCare in Lexington, who discovered he was a good candidate for a new type of cochlear implant, the FLEX 34 electrode.

"The ball has been rolling very quickly, and UK has been very supportive and amazing along the way," Letisha Broadus, DuJuan's mom, said in a news release.

The electrode, recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), experts said, is cutting-edge technology providing electrical hearing stimulation across the full length of DuJuan's inner ear.

His implant will still need to be fine tuned in the next few weeks, but DuJuan is happy so far.

"I've never smiled this much," he said.
