LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With several days of hot weather expected, Louisville doctors are sharing tips to stay safe and prevent heat-related illness.
Doctors with Norton Healthcare said you should minimize your exposure to the sun and heat if possible, and always stay hydrated when temperatures rise.
They said drinking beverages with electrolytes, such as sports drinks, is key. It's also important to be proactive to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
"When we're talking about some of the humidity, some of the heat that we're seeing even this week, I think every day is 90 or above for the highs and we're talking about several days of that. I mean, absolutely anyone is at risk," Dr. Joshua Brandon, a doctor with Norton Healthcare Family Medicine, said.
It's best to take liquids frequently, even if you don't feel thirsty. Â
A football player drinks water during practice.
"We actually tell people that about every 15 minutes or so should be doing about four to eight ounces of fluid," said Brandon said. "And again that can depend on the temperature, it can depend on the activity, but general rule of thumb is every 15 minutes drink four to eight ounces."
If you have symptoms of heat-related illness, such as an elevated heart rate, dizziness, a headache or weakness, you should see a doctor. Severe confusion or passing out is an emergency.
