LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville is one step closer to using drones as first responders.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said Tuesday the city offered positions to its first pilots for the "Drone as a First Responder" program.
The drones, unveiled last year, allow dispatchers to help prepare first responders while they are on the way to a call.Â
The program will deploy drones to emergency scenes and provide real-time video before ground crews arrive.
After the new pilots complete their training, they will work inside a new remote operations center under the supervision of MetroSafe and fly the drones remotely.
Nearly $1 million was invested in the program in 2025. There are currently eight drones docked at fire stations across the city.
An additional $400,000 in the new city budget will expand the program, bringing the total number of docks to 16.
