LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville International Airport is in the middle of a multi-million-dollar facelift -- and it's getting something only three other airports in the country have.

The airport is constantly filled with weary passengers, tiny travelers and jetlagged jetsetters.

"I'm on probably 3-4 flights a week," admitted one traveler.

Right now, bright yellow signs are everywhere, pointing to paths around construction. New terrazzo floors are being put in, creating a sticky, goopy mess, but soon it will be fresh and shiny. Not only that, there will be new carpet, fresh paint, new escalators and an elevator.

They're all on the list of improvements totaling more than $9.5 million.

"The airport is the first place you come into, and the last place you leave if you're coming into the community to visit from out of town," said Skip Miller, CEO of Louisville International Airport.

Construction will disappear for the airport's busiest week.

"Oh, Derby," Miller said. "Yeah, the buzz is already going, you know?"

"We'll finish that at the beginning, or near the beginning, of Derby Festival and we'll keep the construction closed down until after Derby is finished," he added.

After Derby, it's back to work.

New art will showcase the city's roots and hospitality. Several millions of dollars from food and beverage companies will upgrade restaurants. Local favorites like Comfy Cow, Coal's Artisan Pizza, Smashburger and more will move in, along with new shops -- and the airport has landed a Starbucks Evening.

"Which is a brand new concept, there's only three in airports in the country -- 'little' airports like DFW, JFK, LAX," Miller said. "We're the fourth. It's Starbucks on steroids, wine and alcohol selections."

Everything should be finished in the fall.

"We hope people can be patient with us," Miller said. "It will be a beautiful terminal when we're finished."
