LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville leaders hosted a giveaway Monday focused on child safety.
The Metro Office of Violence Prevention teamed up with the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services to give away free gun locks and medication safe storage containers.
Officials said firearms and medications are two of the most common sources of preventable injuries and deaths among children.
"The goal is to prevent harm before it occurs," said Ashley Webb with the OVP. "The reason that we are giving this out is everyone, inside of their home, that has medication or firearms has the ability to keep the children and people in their home safe by keeping those properly stored [and] locked up."
The giveaway followed two accidental shootings involving minors in Louisville this year. State data also shows high rates of injuries from unsecured medications.
It also comes during Child Abuse Awareness Month, serving as a "reminder that prevention often starts with basic safety measures at home."
There will be another free giveaway on Friday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lobby of the L&N building on West Broadway.
