LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville native who has become an NBA star announced a $100,000 donation for Algonquin Park on Saturday.
D'Angelo Russell, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, visited Algonquin Park to announce the investment with Louisville Metro Councilmember Tammy Hawkins (D-1). The D'Angelo Russell Foundation donated the funding to the park for revitalization and upgrades.
"During the cold, during the heat, when weather played a major factor, I was at this park trying to get it in," Russell said. "So knowing that I've come that far to be where I'm at now and to have this support as well, it's always a pleasure but I almost feel accomplished in a way as well."
Algonquin Park is located at 1614 Cypress Street. The 16.4 acre park was acquired in 1928 by the city. It has a basketball court, picnic areas, a spray ground and tennis court.
The left-handed point guard was selected to the 2015-16 All-Rookie team after being the second overall pick in the NBA Draft. Russell was named an NBA all-star in 2018-19.
Throughout his NBA career, Russell has scored nearly 10,000 points and has more than 3,200 assists.
Russell attended Central High School as a freshman before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida.
Last summer, Russell hosted a basketball skills camp, Camp DLO, at MidAmerica Sports Center.
