LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- What started as a small push to fill a void has grown into one of Louisville's largest Thanksgiving missions.
The Turkey Stock took place Thursday for an 11th year at Brownies the Shed Grill and Bar off Hurstbourne.
There were birds aplenty as the community donated more than 2,500 turkeys and 3,000 canned goods.
The annual drive benefits Kentucky Harvest. The nonprofit then supplies area charities and churches who offer Thanksgiving boxes or meals to families in need.
The effort has helped feed tens of thousands of people through the years, and WDRB is proud to have played a small part in its beginnings.
"This event 11 years ago, courtesy of our guy Gilbert Corsey, he ran a story on WDRB about a turkey shortage and we saw it and created Turkey Stock," Joey Wagner said. "And 11 years later, we're still collecting turkeys on the Thursday before Thanksgiving."
As the story goes, Kentucky Harvest lost a sponsor and wasn't going to be able to provide turkeys to nonprofits for Thanksgiving. After WDRB's story aired, Wagner and Jason Brown organized the Turkey Stock drive in a matter of days, and have carried the torch forward continuing to feed the need in the community.
