LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The man who fired a shot that killed a 7-year-old boy is headed to prison.Â
Wyatt Williams was sentenced in court Monday morning to 20 years in prison for the death of Dequante Hobbs.
The 7-year-old was killed by a stray bullet inside his West Madison Street home in May of 2017 while sitting at the kitchen table eating a snack.
Williams read a statement in court and addressed the Hobbs family.Â
"I hate that I wake up every morning knowing I'm responsible for your son's death," he said. "I beg for your forgiveness. I understand why you never want me to get out."
Williams took a plea deal in the case in February, reducing a murder charge to manslaughter along with two counts of wanton endangerment.
"I shouldn't have to bury my son, my son should have been burying me first," said Michesha Norment, Hobbs' mother. "I can't forgive you (Williams). My son should not be laying in the ground at 7. He should be at school."
The state had recommended the 20-year sentence. Williams will be eligible for parole after about two and a half years.Â
