LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's mayor takes on another role: construction worker.

Mayor Greg Fischer picked up a hammer Saturday, helping with the "Community Transformation House Build."

It's an effort by the Fuller Center for Housing of Louisville to help transform the Russell, Shawnee, California and Portland neighborhoods.

Vacant properties are renovated and turned into homes for families.

The goal of this build is to complete ten homes in three weeks.

"We've got great bones in West Louisville and in the homes here, so when you bring them back up and you recreate this type of community, I really love the Fuller model, and then they how the bring all the community together to help rebuild the homes, as well. It's just a great show of teamwork and compassion for our city," Mayor Fischer said.

The Fuller Center partnered with Southeast Christian Church for this build.

They rallied nearly 1,000 volunteers to help.
