LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 100 people were displaced after a fire at a high-rise apartment building in downtown Louisville early Tuesday morning.
According to Louisville Fire, crews responded to a fire at an apartment in the 400 block of South 8th Street around 12:34 a.m. Firefighters arrived within three minutes and found an active fire inside an apartment on the fourth floor.
The building's sprinkler system was already engaged. While the fire was contained to one apartment, smoke and water damage necessitated the evacuation and temporary displacement of around 100 residents.
Two TARC buses were used to provide shelter to the residents who had to evacuate. Occupants on higher floors were allowed to shelter in place.
Fire officials said the fire started from an air conditioning unit. It took 50 firefighters 26 minutes to get the fire under control.
No one was injured in the fire.
The resident who lived in the apartment where the fire started has since been relocated.
Louisville Fire Department's Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
