LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Multiple people are facing charges after a gun was stolen from a vehicle on Meade County High School's campus after hours.

According to Meade County Superintendent Mark Martin, a gun was stolen from a vehicle on campus after hours. There was never a threat to the school, he said.

In a letter sent home to parents Wednesday, school officials said police received a report Tuesday night about the stolen gun. The vehicle arrived on campus after dismissal, and the theft didn't occur during the school day.

The letter states the situation was handled by police as the investigation continued "because the incident occurred after dismissal and there was no indication of any threat to students or school operations."

According to the letter, "individuals involved" were identified and charged in connection with the incident. The gun involved was also recovered.

Meade County Detention Center records show 18-year-old Emmit Day was arrested Wednesday and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and theft of a firearm. Online rosters list Day as a senior on the Meade County High School football team this past season.

The full letter shared to parents can be read below:

"The purpose of this message is to keep our families informed.

Tuesday evening, after school hours, local law enforcement received a report that a weapon had been stolen from a vehicle on the Meade County High School campus. The vehicle arrived on campus after normal dismissal time. This incident did not occur during the normal school day.

Law enforcement immediately began an investigation last night. Because the incident occurred after dismissal and there was no indication of any threat to students or school operations, the situation was handled directly with law enforcement as the investigation unfolded. We are pleased to share that earlier today, the investigation was successfully completed, the weapon was recovered, and the individuals involved have been identified and charged.

We appreciate the quick response and partnership of our local authorities. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to maintain a safe school environment.

Thank you for your continued trust and support."
