US-Iran negotiations end, technical talks will continue after Trump shakes talks with threats
OBBUERGEN, Switzerland (AP) — High-level negotiations in Switzerland seeking a permanent end to the Iran war have ended. Mediators Pakistan and Qatar said that technical talks will go on there for the rest of the week in a statement issued early Monday. The United States did not immediately acknowledge it, but Iran, through Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei speaking to the state-run IRNA news agency, said “good progress was made.” Tehran took offense at comments Sunday by President Donald Trump, who threatened to attack and told Iran's president to watch what he says.
Trump-backed de la Espriella holds razor-thin lead in Colombia's election as rival challenges vote
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Political outsider Abelardo de la Espriella holds a razor-thin lead in Colombia’s presidential election with nearly all the votes counted, in a runoff vote marked by people’s fears of a renewed internal conflict. A victory by de la Espriella would effectively be an indictment of the policies of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, whose protégé had promised to continue his agenda if he defeated his rival, who is backed by President Donald Trump. De la Espriella led progressive lawmaker Iván Cepeda taking 49.7% of the votes to 48.7% for Cepeda. Election officials have not formally announced a winner.

U.S. and Iranian negotiators met in Switzerland for talks on key details of their interim agreement to end the war. A team led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance has met Iranian negotiators, including Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Wyndham Clark avoids record collapse and holds on to win the US Open
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Wyndham Clark is the U.S. Open champion and it was harder work than he ever imagined. He was on the edge of all day of the greatest collapse in U.S. Open history because no one had ever lost a six-shot lead in this championship. Clark's lead was down to one after five holes. But he held his nerve against Sam Burns and a Shinnecock Hills gallery that wanted anyone but him to win. Clark made a huge birdie on the 16th to take a two-shot lead. He two-putted from 50 feet for par to win his second Open title.
7 killed and dozens injured following series of weekend shootings in Chicago
CHICAGO (AP) — Police say a spate of shootings in Chicago has led to at least 38 injuries and seven deaths since Friday evening. On Sunday, President Donald Trump weighed in on social media and renewed his suggestion for a military intervention in the nation’s third largest city. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, has repeatedly rebuffed Trump's calls to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago. While the city has experienced a slight uptick in shootings compared to last year, violent crime rates in the city have generally declined over the past few years in parallel with other U.S. cities, according to police data.
Heat, wind and drought conditions spark wildfires in US West
Extreme heat and dry, windy conditions are fueling several wildfires in the West, including an uncontained blaze in Utah that forced the evacuation of a small town southwest of Salt Lake City. Authorities said Sunday the Iron Fire in Utah’s Juab County had blackened 34 square miles, and all 1,000 residents of the town of Eureka were forced to leave their homes. No structures were lost as of Sunday. Another wildfire prompted evacuations over the weekend near Sedona, Arizona. In Colorado, the southwest corner of the state was under a red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service due to gusty winds and low relative humidity.
Starmer is on the precipice as pressure builds for the UK leader to resign
LONDON (AP) — U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing a crucial decision. Either step down or fight a possible leadership challenge from Labour Party rival Andy Burnham. Starmer has vowed to stay. But pressure is mounting as colleagues believe his time is up. Expectations are growing that he will announce a timetable for his resignation as soon as Monday. Burnham was recently elected as a lawmaker. That puts him in a position to challenge Starmer. Discontent has been building because of Starmer's struggles with economic growth and public services. Business Secretary Peter Kyle said Sunday that Starmer is reflecting on his political situation.
What to know about the legacy of Brexit, which still divides Britain 10 years on
LONDON (AP) — U.K. voters chose to leave the European Union in a referendum that 10 years on still forges political identities. It was a vote that shattered a half-century project to get closer to the continent. Brexit, short for British exit, became a reality on June 23, 2016, when 52% — or more than 17 million people — voted to leave the bloc. Though the margin may have been narrow, the vote led to the most dramatic shake-up of the U.K. economy and society since World War II. But like any divorce, the paperwork and process of completing the breakup was not swift: It took nearly five years.
France restricts public alcohol consumption and outdoor sports as heat wave bakes parts of Europe
PARIS (AP) — France is in the grips of a severe heat wave, leading to canceled trains, concerts and sports events. Authorities have banned public drinking in “red alert” zones to reduce risks. Temperatures reached 40 C or 104 F on Sunday with even hotter conditions expected Monday. The Eiffel Tower and other venues have set up misting stations to cool crowds. Spain, Italy and Germany are also sweltering with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. The World Health Organization warns that more than 200,000 people in Europe have died from heat-related causes over the last four years.
