CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington was ejected Saturday after being called for a Flagrant 2 foul on Indiana’s Sophie Cunningham. Minutes later, Carrington posted on social media the words “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and tagged the Fever. Cunningham, who is white, was shooting a fast-break layup in the first quarter when Carrington, who is Black, came from behind and hit her in the head and neck, knocking her to the court as the shot went in. Later in the game, Fever star Caitlin Clark was assessed her eighth technical foul of the season, triggering an automatic suspension for Indiana's next game.
WNBA commissioner says league will continue discussing issue of transgender participation
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has sent a memo to teams that addresses ongoing discussions around transgender athletes in women’s basketball. The memo says the topic will be discussed further by a task force of team presidents and general managers at a previously scheduled meeting next week. In an ESPN article published last month, Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham voiced support for barring transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports. The Dodgers won despite Edwin Diaz blowing his second consecutive save after losing a 1-0 lead in the ninth. Los Angeles rallied with two outs in the 10th when Hunter Feduccia walked and automatic runner Kyle Tucker moved to third on a wild pitch. Ohtani followed with a grounder to the right side that a diving first baseman Tim Tawa knocked down, but he couldn’t recover to make an out.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Drew Brees has entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig. Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton introduced Brees, who set records and won a Super Bowl playing for Payton with the New Orleans Saints. Brees has the second-most yards passing and touchdown passes in league history. Fitzgerald ranks second on the career list in both receiving yards and touchdown catches. Vinatieri is the career leader in points and field goals. Kuechly became the second-youngest player inducted into the Hall at age 35.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Roger Craig revealed during his induction speech into the Pro Football Hall of Fame that he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. The former San Francisco 49ers star running back spoke in a prerecorded video message while he sat on stage wearing his gold jacket at Tom Benson Stadium on Saturday. Nearly eight minutes into a nine-minute speech, Craig announced his diagnosis. He says his doctors believe “it may be related, at least in part, to the concussions” he experienced during his playing career.

It's the final event of the regular season and the top 70 in the FedEx Cup advance to the playoffs. Hossler had a collection of tough par putts and handled two rain delays for a 66. He needs to win to reach the FedEx Cup playoffs. Brennan shot a 63 and can advance with a tie for second. They're one shot ahead of Tom Kim. Five players are separated by two shots.
Toronto's Max Scherzer moves into 10th place all-time in strikeouts, passing Walter Johnson
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer moved into 10th place all-time in strikeouts, passing Hall of Famer Walter Johnson in the Blue Jays’ 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night. The 42-year-old Scherzer, making his ninth start of the season, has 3,516 career strikeouts, one more than Johnson, and is second to Justin Verlander (3,554) in strikeouts among active pitchers.
College sports bill doesn't get vote, but does get spot on the Senate's September calendar
The Protect College Sports Act failed to reach a vote during an all-night, pre-recess session in the Senate, though the bill did gain a spot on next month’s calendar after the chamber comes back from its summer break. The measure has been touted as one that would put guardrails around an escalating spending spree in college sports as the industry struggles to adapt to a new model in which teams can pay players. It has been on a roller-coaster since its introduction in March. The SEC and Big Ten backing of the bill saved it but failed to sway a few key Senators from states with schools in that conference.
Frederick Richard makes a statement in more ways than one en route to first US gymnastics title
PHOENIX (AP) — Frederick Richard has won his first U.S. men's gymnastics all-around title, cementing his status as the leader of the men's program two years out from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The 22-year-old Richard posted a two-day total of 170.015, well ahead of Shane Wiskus and Danila Leykin. Richard won despite intentionally taking a pair of neutral deductions for violating the sport's uniform code. Richard opts for shorts and compression leggings rather than stirrup pants, some he said is important to help modernize the sport. The decision didn't cost him during the finals, as he put together six polished and confident routines to pull away.
